Switzerland opened the World Cup with a tense 1-0 win over Cameroon, but goalscorer Breel Embolo refused to celebrate. Find out why inside.

Switzerland 1:0 Cameroon

Uruguay – South Korea

Portugal – Ghana

Brazil – Serbia

Breel Embolo scored for his country of birth as Switzerland beat Cameroon 1-0 to kick off their World Cup campaign with a win on Thursday.

Embolo struck three minutes into the second half at the Al Janoub Stadium as Switzerland secured a crucial three points in a group that included tournament favorites Brazil and Serbia.

Cameroon have now lost their last eight World Cup matches dating back to 2002. Roger Milla was awarded as the oldest goalscorer in World Cup history before kick-off. Quarter final 32 years ago.

Cameroon coach Rigobert Song, who played four World Cups with Milla, 42, in 1994, selected in-form Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to lead the attack in place of regular captain Vincent Abubakar.

African teams made an encouraging start in Qatar after all five failed to get past the group stage in 2018, but Cameroon will regret not having more of a first half they controlled.

Bryan Mbeumo fired past Yann Sommer with Martin Hongla’s perfect ball before Karl Toko Ekambi whipped in the rebound.

Sommer then got down to save Choupo-Moting after pinching the ball from Manuel Akanji, although the Bayern Munich striker was flagged for a questionable foul.

Silvan Widmer made a vital challenge to stop Toko Ekambi turning in a pass from Collins Fai and Sommer pushed away Hongla’s weak effort.

With Cameroon switched off on the stroke of half-time, Akanji glanced wide in the corner, but there was no such escape when he was again caught napping at the start of the second half.

Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler fed the ball to Xherdan Shaqiri on the right, whose low cross into the area was swept home by an unmarked Embolo, who chose not to celebrate against his country of birth.

Choupo-Moting neatly dribbled past several defenders in the box but couldn’t beat Sommer from a tight angle.

Andre Onana kept Cameroon in the game with a brilliant stop to deny Ruben Vargas, who found himself completely free on an almost carbon copy of Embolo’s goal.

Only a desperate block prevented Haris Seferovic from adding the final second. Song said the ranking had no meaning going into the tournament, but Cameroon’s eighth World Cup appearance risked being cut short with games against Serbia and Brazil to come.
