A fury of afternoon thunderstorms that hit all three states Friday also produced an EF-0 tornado in New Jersey, the National Weather Service confirmed Saturday.
The touchdown occurred in Hazlet Township shortly after 5:00 p.m. as powerful thunderstorms were moving east in the New York City area.
Surveys of neighborhoods where the tornado briefly touched down found at least six homes with damage to siding, gutters and roof tiles. One of the houses suffered a structural blow when a tree collapsed on its roof, the NWS said.
Trees in residential neighborhoods near the border of Strathmore and Hazlet Township lost limbs and several trunks snapped, surveyors found.
Straight-line winds downed at least four utility poles along Route 35.
