MediaTek has revealed an addition to its lineup of premium 5G chipsets designed to help the company compete on an equal footing at the higher end of the market. smartphone market.
The new Dimensity 9000+ SoC sits at the top of MediaTek’s portfolio, combining eight CPU cores based on Arm’s v9 architecture with an Arm Mali-G710 GPU.
As with the previous model, the chipset also features 8 MB of L3 cache, 6 MB of system cache, a high-performance modem, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support, and an integrated APU for speed acceleration. AI.
Although the specs are largely identical to the base Dimensity 9000, the new SoC is said to offer a substantial performance boost in traditional and graphics workloads, thanks to the ability to run cores at higher clock speeds.
Historically, MediaTek has played into the somewhat less attractive portions of the mobile chipset market, introducing budget and mid-range phones aimed at users for whom performance isn’t necessarily the priority.
The launch of the Dimensity 9000 in December last year marked a change in strategy, which will see MediaTek try for the first time to break into flashship mobile devices, a field traditionally dominated by Qualcomm.
At MWC 2022, Tech Radar Pro spoke with Pascal Lemasson and Rob Moffat, executives in charge of sales at MediaTek, who provided additional context on the company’s new focus and the importance of its new Dimensity chips.
“The strategy is to offer our customers chipsets from the bottom up. Before Dimensity 9000, we had a gap at the top end,” Moffat said. “In the last three years, our investment in R&D has been huge and 5G is a great opportunity for us, so we have made the decision to target the high-end market.”
“Ultimately, we need to focus on technology leadership, which automatically leads to world-class products.”
Meanwhile, the arrival of the Dimensity 9000+ adds another string to MediaTek’s bow, perhaps giving OEMs a tough decision to make when selecting a configuration for their next flagships.
“Building on the success of our first flagship 5G chipset, the Dimensity 9000+ ensures device manufacturers always have access to the most advanced high-performance features and latest mobile technologies, making it possible for their smartphones top notch stand out. ” said Dr. Yenchi Lee, Deputy General Manager of Wireless Communications at MediaTek.
“With a suite of world-class AI, gaming, multimedia, imaging, and connectivity features, Dimensity 9000+ delivers faster gameplay, smoother streaming, and an overall better user experience.”
Smartphones based on MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ will be released in the third quarter.
