At least one person was killed and another was injured after a shooting at the Riverdale High School graduation at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro on Wednesday night.
The shooting took place on campus at MTSU’s Murphy Center around 8:51 p.m. as attendees and students were leaving the commencement ceremony, WKRN reported. Police arrived at the scene and found two victims near the campus tennis courts, one who was pronounced dead at the scene and one who was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds in “critical but stable condition.”
Graduation for the class of 450 students had started at 7 p.m., according to NewsChannel 5.
The suspect or suspects who carried out the shooting are still at large, Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh told NewsChannel 5.
As a precaution, the school will close Thursday, Rutherford County Schools spokesman James Evans was quoted as saying by NewsChannel 5.
“We’re doing this just as a precaution,” he said.
Authorities did not release the names of the victims or comment on the suspects, but the investigation is ongoing.
“Tonight’s shooting at MTSU is a tragedy,” Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dan Goodwin said, quoted by NewsChannel 5.
“We mourn with the family who lost a loved one and the victim was injured. Police found two people being shot near the tennis courts. The shooting occurred as people were leaving the graduation,” Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dan Goodwin said. “We are asking for the patience of the public. We are at ground zero of this investigation.”
