Can a struggling government reverse its fortunes in less than a week? Scott Morrison hopes so, but he seems in need of a second electoral miracle, with the prime minister addressing a lukewarm selection of Liberal Party faithful at the campaign launch in Brisbane today.

With the grueling six-week campaign entering its final stretch, the government has so far failed to cut Labor’s lead in all published opinion polls. Internally, the party’s strategists are getting anxious.

The long campaign was bound to wear down Anthony Albanese. But since he recovered from his error on opening day, the leader of the opposition seems to grow in stature.
