Russia’s strategic goal in the war in Ukraine is the complete destruction of the Ukrainian state and the Ukrainian nation, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said on Thursday.
She told a briefing that the situation remains difficult for Ukrainian forces and Russia’s main focus now is to establish full control over the Luhansk and Donetsk regions of eastern Ukraine.
“The main strategic, military-political and military-economic goals of Russia with regard to our state remain the complete destruction of the Ukrainian state and the (Ukrainian) nation, as well as the destruction of the military and economic foundations of our state,” Maliar said.
She said Russia’s military goals also include destroying weapons and equipment shipped to Ukraine by its foreign partners and damaging transportation infrastructure used to transport military and civilian goods.
Further military action would depend on the resources Ukraine has at its disposal, he said, in an apparent reference to Ukraine’s requests that its allies provide it with more weapons.
Russia did not immediately comment on Malyar’s comments.
Moscow says its “special military operation” is aimed at disarming and “denazifying” its neighbor. Ukraine and the West say that Russia has launched an unprovoked war of aggression.
