The Portugal squad is assembled and a lot is expected of them in this tournament, especially since this is Cristiano Ronaldo’s last World Cup. Given all the headlines surrounding his future at Manchester United and now that his contract has been terminated, the global superstar will be keen to impress potential suitors in recent weeks.

As for Ghana, the Black Stars have plenty of new talent for this World Cup and it will be a huge achievement if they get out of Group H. Otto Addo will be hoping his team can pull off a few shocks.

Key storylines, players to watch closely

Portugal have so much incredible midfield and attacking talent that they need to go deep in this tournament. Ronaldo is the main man up top, but Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix, Rafael Leao and Bernardo Silva will be key. Add in the defensive class of Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and a resurgent Diogo Dalot, and it’s a talented squad. The inclusion of Ruben Neves, Otavio and Joao Palhinha in midfield shows the incredible depth of the squad Fernando Santos has assembled. Anything less than the quarter finals is a disappointment.

There are plenty of additions to Ghana’s ranks as Tariq Lamptey (Brighton), Mohammed Salisu (Southampton) and Inaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao) have become Black Stars regulars. Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew are the top threats, while Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is at the heart of this team. Look out for forward Mohammed Kuddus who has had a good season at Ajax.
