The former manager of the North Queensland Cowboys and Queensland State of Origin also played first-grade rugby league for a decade, appearing for Cronulla, North Queensland, the Roosters, Parramatta and the Broncos.

He also played 10 Origin matches for Queensland and a test for Australia in 1997.
