Official deputy kills protester and takes his own life: Police

COLOMBO: A lawmaker from Sri Lanka’s ruling party shot dead an anti-government protester and then killed himself during a clash outside the capital, police said on Monday.
Amarakeerthi Athukorala opened fire, seriously injuring two people who were blocking her car in the city of Nittambuwa, police said, adding that one of the victims died of her injuries.
“The MP fled the scene and took refuge in a nearby building,” a police officer told AFP by phone. “Thousands surrounded the building and then he killed himself with his revolver.”
The incident came as thousands of people took to the streets on the island under curfew and attacked supporters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who later tendered his resignation.
Rajapaksa loyalists had earlier in the day destroyed tents and banners of anti-government protesters who have camped outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s official residence since April 9.
In the violence in the capital Colombo, at least 138 people were injured and admitted to Colombo National Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
