One person has died and another is in critical but stable condition after a shooting Wednesday night outside the Murphy Center at Middle Tennessee State University.
Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dan Goodwin did not reveal the identity of the person killed during an 11 pm news conference outside the campus.
The shooting happened shortly before 9:00 pm outside the Murphy Center near the tennis courts as Riverdale High’s graduation ceremony was concluding.
The shooter is still at large, Goodwin said.
“Tonight’s shooting at Middle Tennessee State University is a tragedy for our community. We mourn the family who lost a loved one and the victim who was injured,” Goodwin said.
The university posted Wednesday night on Facebook around 9:15 p.m. warning people to leave the Murphy Center immediately and shelter in place if they cannot safely leave the area.
Rutherford County School spokesman James Evans said Riverdale High will be closed Thursday and a decision about Friday classes will be made later.
MTSU began summer classes on campus on Monday, about a week and a half after graduation, with most students leaving for summer break.
They asked that any suspicious activity be reported to MTSU police at 615-898-2424.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
