It’s been over 25 years since the first Toy Story film was released, and the franchise still continues to reach audiences across generations to this day. Along with the four Toy Story films, Pixar and Disney breathed new life into the film series with the “Lightyear” spin-off movie, which just hit theaters on Friday, June 17. With an incredible cast including Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Uzo Aduba, and Taika Waititi (and in particular not Tim Allen), coupled with an incredible story and stunning animation, “Lightyear” is wowing fans of the Toy Story franchise to infinity and beyond.

The official trailer for “Lightyear” was released on February 8, and viewers around the world were curious about the song that perfectly accompanies Buzz Lightyear’s space travels. While fans didn’t know specific details about the movie’s plot at this point, lyrics like “There’s a star man waiting in the sky” seemed to fit the theme of the movie perfectly. Now that we know that the movie is actually the movie that Buzz Lightyear’s toy in the “Toy Story” movies was based on (yes, you read that right, it’s a real movie inspired by the fake movie that inspired Buzz Lightyear’s fake toy) Buzz Lightyear in “Toy Story”…all of which are now real).

Now, the question is, is the song in the “Lightyear” trailer real, or just something else made up for the good of the “Toy Story” universe? The answer is that the song is real. Here is everything you need to know about it.

What song is in the “Lightyear” trailer?

In the second half of the trailer, as Buzz Lightyear launches into space in the spaceship, David Bowie’s “Starman” plays in the background. “Starman” was the first single from David Bowie’s 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. The song tells a story from the perspective of Bowie’s alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, who Bowie himself once described in a “Rolling Stone” interview as “this incredible spaceman who’s coming to save the Earth.”

“Starman” isn’t Bowie’s only intergalactic-themed song, with “Space Oddity” and “Life on Mars” among other fan favorites.

Lyrics and TranslationStarman

Bowie’s “Starman” has lyrics that paint a picture of a heroic man in space who is destined to bring hope and peace to the world. The lyrics included in the trailer are as follows:

There’s a starman waiting in the sky
Would you like to come meet us?
But he thinks he’d blow our minds
There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He told us not to mess it up.
Cause he knows it’s all worth it
He told me
let the kids lose it
Let the children use it.
Let all the children dance

How do the lyrics of “Starman” connect to the movie “Lightyear”?

“Lightyear” is a spin-off of the Toy Story franchise that focuses on the human character that inspired the beloved toy Buzz Lightyear. Yes, you heard right. Buzz Lightyear is a toy version of a human character in the film franchise, who knew! In the film, Buzz Lightyear (Evans) is a respected space ranger who ventures into space with the help of a group of space rangers and a robot cat named Sox (Peter Sohn). In the midst of his space adventure, Buzz encounters robots and intergalactic creatures, making his journey wild.

Considering that Bowie’s “Spaceman” is about a heroic man destined to bring hope and peace to the world, the character of Buzz seems to fit the bill.

“Lightyear” will open in theaters on June 22. Until then, check out the trailer below!
