Jordie Benn of the Maple Leafs will be placed on IR with an upper body injury

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jordie Benn will be placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, head coach Sheldon Keefe announced Thursday.

Keefe added that while the exact extent of the injury has yet to be determined, the team is reviewing Benn on a week-to-week basis.

Benn left the Maple Leafs’ win over the New Jersey Devils early on Wednesday night.

The 35-year-old left the Maple Leafs bench halfway through the second period after appearing to work around the ice.

Benn returned to start the third period, but returned to the room after only playing two turns. Benn logged just 9:36 of ice time in the game.

Having already lost their three highest-paid defensemen, the Maple Leafs will now be without another blueliner for at least a week.
