North London Derby POSTPONED – Cartilage Free Captain

According to Alasdair Gold on Twitter this morning, tomorrow’s North London Derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal is OFF. The announcement should be made as soon as possible this morning.

Tottenham were set to play the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow but Arsenal had appealed to the Premier League for the postponement as they only have 12 first-team players available. The Gunners have several players injured, one player suspended due to a red card, two players currently absent from the Africa Cup of Nations, just loaned out two more players last week and had one (1) presumptive positive test to COVID-19.

To the letter of the league’s COVID-era postponement policy, which does not specifically dictate that you need multiple positive COVID tests or an outbreak to qualify for a postponement, Arsenal meet the criteria for a postponement, although it is rich enough that the Gooners are going to get it after howling in protest after Liverpool successfully postponed the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final between the two clubs due to what turned out to be a series of sketchy COVID false positives last week.

Also, I would really like to know how the Premier League justifies this postponement when at the start of this season they forced Leeds to play a game (against Arsenal!) during a COVID outbreak with only nine senior players left. good health. But whatever. We probably won’t get that. Above all, I find this whole scenario just darkly hilarious.

I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad result for Spurs – they’re already set to play without Eric Dier, Cuti Romero and Son Heung-Min and it gives them more time to (hopefully) get back into the squad. and pick up speed. But wow, at first glance that sounds like a load of bullshit, doesn’t it?

We’ll await official confirmation, but it looks like this will be Tottenham’s fourth game in hand this season. Yeaaaah!

Update: Confirmed. The game is officially cancelled.
