Cristiano Ronaldo has made his feelings clear when it comes to his Manchester United ambitions.

United sit seventh in the Premier League, 22 points behind league leaders Manchester City, but that’s not enough for the Portugal international.

Ronaldo said: “I don’t want to be here, to be in sixth place, or seventh place, or fifth place. I am here to try to win, to compete.

He also stressed that a good mentality is crucial to close the gap with the top four. When asked if United could catch up with them without it, he replied: “Impossible – I think that’s the main point.

“I don’t accept that our mentality is inferior to being in the top three in the Premier League.

“I think that in order to build good things, sometimes you have to destroy a few things. So why not – new year, new life and hopefully Manchester (United) can be the level the fans want. They deserve this.

“We are able to change things now. I know the way but I’m not going to mention it here because I don’t think it’s ethical of me to say that.

“What I can say is that we can all do better, all of us. Manchester (United) belongs to big things so we have to change that.

“I don’t want to be here to be sixth, or seventh, or fifth. I am here to try to win, to compete.

“I think we are in competition but we are not yet at our best. But we have a long way to go to improve and I think if we change our mind we can achieve great things.
