Biden administration announces record-breaking offshore wind lease sale

Up to 80,000 new jobs in the wind energy sector could be created by 2030.

The Biden administration continues to make progress on its climate agenda with several federal agencies announcing new clean energy projects that aim to create union jobs and move America forward towards a greener economy.

The biggest project includes a record sale of wind leases off the coasts of New York and New Jersey that is expected to generate up to 7 gigawatts of clean energy, enough to power 2 million homes, according to the Home Office . The department will oversee six different rental areas that cover nearly 500,000 acres along the New York-New Jersey coast. Financial incentives will also be available for wind turbine materials made in the United States.

As offshore wind grows in the country, the administration estimates that up to 80,000 new jobs in the wind energy sector could be created by 2030.

This giant push for wind power is helping President Joe Biden meet an administrative goal of 100% carbon-free electricity by 2035. In addition, the president has set a target of 25 gigawatts of clean energy ashore by 2025.

Over the past year, the Home Office has approved 18 land-based clean energy projects that will deliver over 4 gigawatts of power and there are 54 other projects underway that could deliver over 27 gigawatts of power. clean energy thanks to wind, solar and geothermal installations.

To help ensure all this clean energy reaches the homes of millions of Americans, the Department of Energy is using funds established in the bipartisan infrastructure law to accelerate the deployment of new transmission lines to connect consumers to a cleaner and cheaper energy.
