Xtra Time Web Desk: Heavyweights England and Netherlands register victories in their opening matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. England kicked off their World Cup campaign in earnest by beating Iran 6-2 in Group B at the Khalifa International Stadium. Bukayo Saka (43′ & 62′) scored twice for the Three Lions, while Jude Bellingham (35′), Marcus Rashford (71′), Jack Grealish (90′) and Raheem Sterling (45′) were also on the scoresheet. Iran managed to reduce the deficit with the double strikes of Mehdi Taremi (65′ & 90+13′).
In Group A, late strikes from Cody Gakpo (84′) and Davy Klassen (90+9′) helped the Netherlands to a 2-0 win over Senegal at the Al Thumama Stadium on Monday. Gakpo opened the scoring with 6 minutes left on the clock, finishing perfectly from a pass from Frankie de Jong. Moments later, Klaassen saved a poor Mendy to score on the rebound nine minutes into stoppage time.
In Monday’s other Group A match, the USA and Wales settled for a 1-1 draw. Tim Weah led the USA in 36c In the second minute, Wales equalized thanks to their talismanic captain Gareth Bale, who scored from the penalty spot.
