Tommy Freeman will start at right-back for England against South Africa in the final November rugby test on Saturday, with Alex Coles coming in at blindside flanker.

Freeman has been in the training squad throughout November and finally gets the chance to add two caps in place of Jack Nowell, who has been named among the substitutes.

Coles, who made his debut against Argentina three weeks ago, is available for Sam Simmonds, who also moves to the bench.

In two other pack changes, prop Mako Vunipola and spinner Jamie George move into the starting line-up, replaced by Ellis Genge and Luke Cowan-Dickie.

England will be desperate to end the November series with a win after a struggling draw with New Zealand, a convincing win over Japan and a first-round defeat to Argentina.

“This is our last game of the fall and a chance to continue the improvements we’ve been making throughout the games,” coach Eddie Jones said.

“We made steady progress game by game and ended up with a pulsating draw against New Zealand. Now we have a chance to test ourselves against the power of the world champions.

“We will go out there to enlighten the people. The support at Twickenham last week was great and we want to work hard on the pitch to make sure we have that atmosphere again on Saturday.”

South Africa named their squad earlier in the week and were forced into a number of changes after English and French players were forced to rejoin their clubs as Saturday’s game falls outside the international testing window.

The Rugby Football Union has an agreement with Premier League clubs to allow players to be released.

Last year, England led South Africa by one point at Twickenham, one of three wins in their last four meetings – the defeat was in the 2019 World Cup final.

England squad: Freddie Steward, Tommy Freeman, Manu Tuilagi, Owen Farrell (C), Johnny May, Marcus Smith, Jack van Poortvliet, Mako Vunipola, Jamie George, Kyle Sinckler, Maro Itoje, Jonny Hill, Alex Coles, Tom Curry, Billy Vunipola.
