Dave Chappelle was accosted by a gunman while performing at the Hollywood Bowl

According to witnesses who attended his show and images circulating on social networks, the comedian david chappelle was assaulted on stage during his performance at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night.

Etienne Maurice, son of famous actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who witnessed the attack, tweeted:

“Seeing Dave Chappelle get attacked by someone in the audience, and then seeing the guy get assaulted by Dave Chappelle and his crew must be the wildest live show I’ve ever seen.”

Footage from multiple attendees also showed Dave Chappelle was on stage at the outdoor venue when a man lunged at him, knocking him to the ground. Security then dragged the man away. Police concluded the man was armed with a replica of a weapon “that can eject a knife blade,” according to ABC News Los Angeles.

Dave Chappelle attacker hospitalized

LAPD confirmed that they had arrested a man. It was not immediately clear if the man tried to use the weapons he was carrying. Police also said the man did not hurt Chappelle in the incident. However, eyewitness footage shows that doctors treated the attacker after the incident.

Chappelle continued the show after the stage attack

In video footage immediately after the attack, Chappelle regained his composure and continued the jokes.

“He was a trans man.”

The comedian referenced the ongoing controversy surrounding his jokes in his Netflix specials that critics perceive as transphobic.

Later, in the video of the curtain call, Chappelle called to thank actor and comedian Jamie Foxx.

Make some noise for Foxx. Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat,” said Chappelle.

Foxx joked back.

“N——, I thought that was part of the show, I didn’t know what the heck…”
