The bruised and battered face of the Colorado Springs LGBTQ nightclub shooter was made public Wednesday when the Colorado Springs Police Department released his bullet. The suspect, 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, was beaten and pistol-whipped by Club Q patrons after he stormed into Club Q and opened fire on Saturday night, killing five people and injuring eighteen others.

After most of the mainstream media, President Biden and others blamed the attack on LGBTQ hatred, although no motive was known, the suspect was revealed to be non-binary, using the pronouns “they/them” and “Mx. Anderson Aldrich.”

He made his first court appearance on Wednesday and could hardly sit still:

The New York Times He reported that Aldrich was “squatting down” and “crushed, swollen, and giving dumb answers to the judge’s brief questions.” He appeared via video:

The suspect … was released from jail on video and ordered held without bail. The accused shooter, who is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and hate crimes, is expected to be formally charged at a December 6 court hearing.

District Attorney Michael J. Allen later said at a news conference that the suspect’s gender identity will not determine whether he will be charged with hate crimes. “I look at the evidence,” he said. “We look at that when we make decisions about the documents.”

The NY Post states that the suspect has difficulty speaking:

“Anderson Aldrich, have you watched the video about your constitutional rights in this case?” asked the judge.

“Yes,” Aldrich replied in a whisper after a long pause.

Do you have any questions about these rights?” said the judge.

Aldrich didn’t answer for a few seconds before answering, “No.”

Aldrich’s shooting is stopped by Richard Fierro, a decorated Army veteran who beats up the suspect, causing him to be trampled by a trans woman in heels. Fierro described his ordeal as follows:

“I just know I went into mode and I had to save my family — and my family was all in that room at the time,” she said at a press conference outside her home on Monday.

“That’s what I was trained to do. I saw it and I went and got it… I tried to save people and it didn’t work at five. “There are five people who are not at home at the moment.”

“I didn’t ask for it,” she said, adding that she was there to watch her daughter’s junior prom. “I’m not a hero, I’m just a friend,” he said.

He also discussed the devastating night on CNN:

More details are emerging about the shooter’s strange past. As Nick Araman reports:

His [Aldrich’s] his original name was Nicholas Brink. Her father, Aaron Brink, is a former MMA fighter and meth user, porn star, and actor on some reality TV shows like The Intervention and Divorce Court.

Aaron Brink hadn’t seen his son in years. Aldrich’s mother is also unsurprisingly concerned and has a current arrest warrant for him and previous arrests, including arson in 2012.

It’s a sad, horrifying story, made worse by accusations and speculation thrown around while the facts – most importantly the motive – are still not fully known.
