Charlize Theron shares a behind-the-scenes look at her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut

Two immediate observations come to mind when looking at Clea’s costume from every angle. For one thing, her makeup is incredibly eye-catching. She wears a bright purple eyeshadow above and below her eyes which brings out a confident and slightly nervous look. Two, her outfit looks almost like armor, more akin to the intricate chests the Eternals wear than anything else in Doctor Strange’s wardrobe. The overall effect is that Clea resembles both a warrior and a mage, strong and ready for battle.

She does, however, have one wardrobe item that screams future Sorceress Supreme: her cape. In a shot that reveals her costume from behind, we see that Clea’s royal purple cape is attached to rigid shell-shaped pieces with circular gold clasps. The cape is actually various shades of purple and is decorated with a pattern of thin white circles of all sizes. As the MCU continues to highlight what Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) calls “The Big Three” (androids, aliens, and wizards), Clea’s costume integrates bits of design that feel like the culmination of all the elements of fantasy and franchise sci-fi to date.

Personally, I’m not all that interested in the flashier wardrobe era that Marvel seems to be entering, but this behind-the-scenes video definitely shows the level of detail that went into Clea’s appearance. We still don’t know where or when Theron will make her Marvel movie debut, but we do know that when she does, she’ll be dressed for work.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is in theaters now.
