WIPL 2023: With the maiden Women’s IPL just four months away, the BCCI is yet to reveal its plans. A key point that has not yet been made public is the process of acquiring a franchise. However, according to a News18 report, the BCCI is considering a base price of around Rs 400 crore. This was the base price set by BCCI for Men’s IPL franchises in 2008. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will have their own WIPL teams and are ready to pick up their tender documents as soon as BCCI announces it, InsideSport has already reported. 5 more IPL teams have also shown interest. Last month, the BCCI approved the five-team WIPL in its general meeting. The board has also finalized the 22-game format for the tournament. Existing men’s IPL franchises have also shown interest in acquiring franchises. However, to date, stakeholders are undecided on how to distribute the franchises.

“We will be interested in buying a Women’s IPL team once we know about the relevant process. We have not been given any information from BCTI so far.” A CSK official told InsideSport earlier.

WIPL 2023: Everything you need to know:

  • The BCCI is preparing to issue a tender document for franchise companies that want to buy teams.
  • The base price is expected to be set at $50 million, the same as the 2008 IPL franchise fee.
  • However, instead of giving preference to IPL teams first, the BCCI will hold an open tender for all interested parties.
  • With this, new players can also overtake the IPL franchises.
  • BCCI will also conduct a separate tender for the electronic auction of broadcasting rights.
  • BCCI is also busy looking for the availability of leading women cricketers across the world.
  • According to News18, the BCCI has already started signing contracts with players from India and abroad.
  • The move will help validate the presence of foreign players in the women’s IPL.
  • This central contract will lead to an agreement with the franchise once the team decides to acquire the player.
  • Initially, players will go through selection instead of auction for the men’s IPL.
  • Like the men’s IPL. Four foreign players will play in the eleven and a squad can have a maximum of 18 players.

The tournament is likely to start in the second week of March 2023 and conclude around March 23. Instead of a home-and-away system, the WIPL will operate in a caravan style where matches are played in two or more cities.

“We would like to have non-traditional IPL venues for WIPL. However, not every city can expect huge crowds for a women’s competition. To move to that stage, we have to prepare accordingly. Debates will start at traditional cricket centers and will change venues in future editions,” he said. A senior BCCI official told InsideSport earlier.

The tournament will be played in two weeks with 22 games. The WIPL will follow a league and playoff format with the best team qualifying directly for the finals. The 2nd and 3rd place teams will play an eliminator. The owners of the team will be determined by December.
