BBC pundit Robbie Savage scoffed at his claim that “it’s just Iran, I could still play against them and win before the Wales defeat”.

ROBBIE SAVAGE was ridiculed after claiming he was “only Iran” and “could have won a game of football” against Carlos Queiroz’s side ahead of Wales’ embarrassing defeat.

Rob Page’s men were humiliated by Iran after losing 2-0 at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium and now face a mountain to climb to reach the last 16 of the World Cup.

The Dragons surrendered after Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off in the 86th minute.

Iran then opened the scoring through Rouzbeh Cheshmi in the eighth minute of stoppage time, before Ramin Rezaeian completed the upset victory just three minutes later.

Savage, 48, was left with egg on his face on Monday as he believed Wales would destroy Iran.

The former Leicester ace even insisted that non-league club Macclesfield would beat Queiroz’s men.

Presenting BBC Radio 606, Savage told presenter Chris Sutton: “It’s just Iran… Iran were awful, awful and you think Wales will come last?

“Now I could play against Iran and win a football game. Iran is so bad that Wales and USA will beat Iran.

“I watched all the TV broadcasts, Iran was useless. Macclesfield would defeat Iran.”

Sutton warned not to underestimate Iran and was proved right as Wales’ World Cup qualification chances hang in the balance after a 1-1 draw with the USA.

The former Chelsea ace took to social media after the game to give his host a slice of humble pie.

Sutton tweeted: “It’s only Iran,” @RobbieSavage8 said last night. Such disrespect. Iran deserved a better team. He was a Welsh schoolboy. Iran played well.”

“Looking forward to the 606 tonight,” Savage replied with a Welsh flag and a sad emoji.

More fans took to Twitter to weigh in on the celebrity pundit.
