Australia must ‘change the way it talks’ to the Pacific Islands

Melanesian News Network editor Dorothy Wickham says Australia needs to start “changing the way it talks” to Pacific islands.

It comes as Chinese ships and planes are due to arrive in the Solomon Islands in four weeks, following the signing of a security pact between the two nations.

“Australia needs to change its narrative in how it approaches, not just the Solomon Islands, but the Pacific in general,” Ms Wickham told Sky News Australia.

He said Australia must take into account the needs of the Pacific, noting the significant problem of climate change in the region.

“Australia must now review its strategy in the Pacific and the Solomon Islands… and also start to change the way it speaks to us,” he told Sky News Australia.
