A man in his 50s dies in West Cork after struggling while swimming

A man in his 50s has died after getting into trouble while swimming in Lough Hyne, near Skibbereen, west Cork, on Sunday afternoon.

The experienced swimmer is suspected of having a heart attack while swimming with others.

Neighbors used a defibrillator located on the pier while the gardaí, firefighters and the Irish Community Air Ambulance mobilized

While paramedics attended the scene around 12:45 p.m. and performed CPR, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

The man, reportedly a local businessman, was well known locally.

The Garda Press Office said his body was taken to the morgue at Cork University Hospital.
