A large-scale immersive light installation is coming to Carriageworks for Vivid

The public space of Carriageworks will be transformed by a massive light installation next month as part of Vivid. Contacta work by lighting artist Sam Whiteside (also founder of Sydney’s experimental art and music collective Soft Centre), it will use algorithms to generate simulations and pulsing beams of light that will warp and bend the shadows of the historic Carriageworks buildings.

The effect will be completed by a dense blanket of mist and a mesmerizing soundscape composed and produced by Patrick Liney (of electronic duo Cosmo’s Midnight). DJs will play each night of the facility, with free sets from Body Corp, Cousin, Flower Boy, Salllvage, Stereogamous and Vibe Positive.

Soft Center will also take over the Carriageworks venue for a full day on June 4 for a festival bringing together experimental electronic music, performing arts and emerging technology. Expect a performance of new music by Canberra-born, Sydney-based EBM (electronic body music) artist Gus McGrath, arranged by Marcus Whale and art directed by artist Chloe Corkran. There will also be a set by Gamilaraay DJ Crescendoll, backed by a performance by the Club Chrome pole dancer collective; a set by the American DJ and producer Estoc; and a live set by Makeda, which melds her soothing sounds with figure skating.

Another artist has also been added to Carriageworks’ musical lineup, which already includes heavy hitters like Japanese rock band Chai, queer indie icon Perfume Genius, and synth-driven musicians Jono Ma and Jonti. Cult-favorite rapper and singer Zheani has been announced as the support act for Estonian rapper Tommy Cash on June 3.

Along the Vivid, Atomic Brewery, down the street in Redfern, will serve beers and tequila-based cocktails, in addition to serving its signature Asian fusion dishes, including pork bao, makrut lime-infused sausage rolls and turmeric and spicy potato chips.

Contact will be in Vivid from June 2 to 11. Entrance to the facility is free.
