A couple staying on the 40th floor of The Shard were in bed when they saw a man waving and walking past their window at 6 a.m.

Paul Curphey said it was “incredibly uplifting” to see the young man on Sunday, who appeared to have scaled the 1,016-foot building in central London barefoot.

The Metropolitan Police later confirmed that a 21-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of breaking and entering and two other men arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance, as the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade attended the place.

Curphey, 52, and his partner Treasaidh, were visiting the capital for a birthday trip and were lying in bed on the 40th floor of the building when someone started “waving through the window”.

“The climber was shouting in celebration,” Curphey, an Isle of Man retailer, told the PA news agency.

“He appeared, waving at the window, 40 floors above, already in the background, so to speak. We couldn’t help but urge you to complete his mission.

“He was smiling, waving and having the time of his life.

“(My) partner thought he had done his best and I got a guy to bring a box of Milk Tray for his birthday.”

Curphey added that the climber was on a “happy demeanor.”

“It was scary to watch, but his happy demeanor was incredibly uplifting.”

YouTuber Adam Lockwood posted photos and videos of himself climbing The Shard on Sunday, with one post appearing to show him on top of the building.
