10 people died in an apartment fire in Xinjiang, northwest China

BEIJING (AP) — Ten people have been killed and nine others injured in a fire at an apartment building in northwest China’s Xinjiang region.

The fire broke out on Thursday night in the regional capital Urumqi, where temperatures dropped below freezing after dark. It took about three hours to extinguish the fire.

All of the injured are expected to survive and the cause of the fire is under investigation, the local government said.

The tragedy comes days after 38 people died in a fire at an industrial trading company in central China caused by welding sparks that ignited cotton fabric.

Four people were detained in connection with the fire in Anyang, and local authorities ordered extensive security checks.

Dilapidated infrastructure, poor security awareness and, in some cases, government corruption have led to recent fires, explosions and building collapses around China, which continues to struggle with new COVID-19 outbreaks, leading to lockdowns and strict travel restrictions affecting millions of people . .
